As an FSU student living off campus, you have many temptations, such as brushing off studying for the exam to hang out with your buddies. For some people, they really need to study and get work done in the library to isolate themselves from all the distractions at their off campus housing. It’s so easy to fall off track if you see your roommates playing video games or just watching TV. If you’re that kind of person, then you are definitely better off going to the library on campus so you will only be surrounded by people who are working. This will act as motivation and get you to keep working and studying, so when you’re done, you actually do all the things your other roommates are doing at home.
Then again, there are also students who really can’t stand getting work done at the FSU library. For them, the environment is too quiet that it actually is distracting, or they just tend to lose focus as they people watch other students studying or walking through the library. If you fall into this group, then you can give studying at home a shot. However, you once again come across a temptation of your roommates and their activities.
An alternative you could try out is getting your work done at a local Tallahassee, Florida coffee shop, such as a local Starbucks. You still get the whole vibe of people around you working and reading, yet it is not as uncomfortably silent as the library’s environment. People around you will still be chatting, having conversations, and enjoying the coffee, so if you believe that you can still work with this kind of static noise in the background, then this might be the place for you to study and actually see success with your work.
Deciding where to study is really dependent upon your own taste. You really have to try things out first and see what works best for you. Be willing to experiment and don’t worry if things don’t work out, as you will be learning more about yourself with each of these experiences.
You also think about the kinds of things you’ll need when doing schoolwork. Will you need a huge desk? Will you be using a desktop computer or a laptop for your work? Answering these kinds of questions can give you a better idea of what kind of environment you’ll need for studying. Everyone’s different, so don’t be discouraged if a friend suggested a place to study that they like and things don’t turn out the way you expect. Find your own way of studying, as that is really the only way to see true success that can last for long term.
So what do you plan to do? Now, that you are living off campus, at say University Green FSU, do you plan on studying at the Florida State University library or at your best FSU off campus housing? Think about what your priorities are and what is necessary to get those things accomplished. For some, everything can be done from the comfort of their own desk in the bedroom, while for others they really need to be in a quiet, isolated environment similar to the FSU library.
No matter what you decide to do, try as much as possible to avoid temptations of falling off track. When you are living off campus, the library is so much further away and is not necessarily a simple walking distance, so it is very easy to become lazy and not study for an exam or get any schoolwork done due to the distance from the library.
Don’t fall into this trap, as continually doing this would develop bad habits and you won’t be able to achieve your academic goals this way. Remember that your future is at stake here. If you don’t do well, to have a much harder time landing a job that will fulfill your needs.
